María Victoria Díaz-González
Waterkeeper Membership Services Coordinator
Since 8/16/21
María Victoria Díaz-González is the Waterkeeper Membership Services Coordinator for Waterkeeper Alliance. She joined the organization in August 2021 and provides capacity-building and facilitation services to about 40 Waterkeeper Groups in these regions. She also serves as their main point of contact with Waterkeeper Alliance.
María immigrated to Queens, New York as a kid. Her first experience with the ocean was going to Coney Island for her seventh birthday. The beach and the ocean have been a birthday tradition ever since.
Maria has traveled widely and heard intimate stories about people and their waterways: About lazy days spent fishing; about water contaminated with lead; about homes and villages sleeping beneath reservoirs. She was thus drawn to Waterkeeper Alliance for its local focus and global vision.
Prior to joining Waterkeeper Alliance, María worked in a variety of fields including urban farming and refugee assistance. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in African and African-American Studies from Stanford University. Outside of work she enjoys writing, anime and long walks.
“I returned to New York City four years ago after living in various other places for years. I returned, but I didn’t completely feel that I’d come home until I went to the beach and visited the Atlantic. I hadn’t realized before then, but am grateful still for the sense of home that that water has given me.”
