Dr. Howard Rubin
Dr. Howard A. Rubin is a Professor Emeritus of the City University of New York, an MIT CISR Research Affiliate, the founder of Rubin Worldwide, an advisor to the world’s major financial services organizations, and a consultant to major consultancies and research organizations. In 1997, Industry Week named Dr. Rubin one of the top 50 “R&D Stars to Watch . . . an individual whose achievements are shaping the future of our industrial culture and America’s technology policy” as a result of his bringing the IT workforce shortage to national attention.
Although best known for his pioneering work in the area of technology economics, Dr. Rubin possesses a Ph.D. from the City University of New York in Marine Microbial Ecology and Computer Science. His early research and publications focused on salt marsh ecology. Dr. Rubin research has been published in the Journal of Theoretical Biology, Journal of Protozoology, Journal of Phycology, Annals of the Institute of Oceanography, Estuarine Research, and Journal of Limnology & Oceanography. He was also involved in the analysis of the impact of nuclear power generating plants such as Indian Point and Shoreham. Locally, Dr. Rubin was a member and then Chair of the Pound Ridge Water Control Commission – overseeing the enforcement of one of New York State’s first acts of wetlands control legislation. As an extension of his interest in ecology and the environment, Dr. Rubin became a supporter of Riverkeeper in 1996 and eventually joined its Board and became Chair from 2010-2015. In 2016, Riverkeeper honored Dr. Rubin at its 50th anniversary gala as its “Big Fish Emeritus” along with its other 2016 honorees – Leonardo DiCaprio, Ralph Lauren, and Robert DeNiro. At that event, a documentary on Riverkeeper’s history produced by Dr. Rubin and the Tribeca Film Fellows and introduced by Mr. DeNiro had its premiere.
In the realm of technology, he built the world’s largest database in the field consisting of business, national, and technology data – tracking 20% of the world’s GDP. Dr. Rubin has also worked directly with heads of state around the world in the development of national competitive strategies and job creation programs. His work has been used by former President William Clinton and Secretary Hillary Clinton and has been the subject of briefings to former Vice President Al Gore and more recently, President Obama’s National Economic Council.
