Futaleufú Riverkeeper and Chicas al Agua

By: Futaleufú Riverkeeper

Chicas al Agua was formed in 2019 by Futaleufú Riverkeeper. The completely free program is held every summer season in Futaleufú. It is led by an exclusively female team that teaches kayaking to young women from Futaleufú. It also strives to develop leadership skills, teamwork, confidence, self-esteem and, at the same time, promotes the defense and conservation of free and wild rivers through educational activities.

Chicas al Agua begins every summer in January, bringing together girls from Futaleufu who participate in two weekly classes led by female kayakers. This space not only allows them to develop their sports skills and grow around kayaking, but also through educational meetings, they immerse themselves in the importance of conserving and protecting the ecosystems that surround us, reflecting on our role in caring for the environment. The exchange of ideas, knowledge, and sustainable practices with young people is essential to raise awareness and strengthen our connection with nature.

Goals of the program:

  1. To foster a connection for young girls from Futaleufú between the ages of 12 and 17 with rivers through the practice of kayaking, strengthening the connection with nature, and contributing to gender equality.
  2. Work on developing confidence, self-esteem and teamwork.
  3. Reflect on our role and the importance of caring for, protecting, and conserving our rivers and our environment through environmental education initiatives.

Gains:

  1. 2025 marks the 6th consecutive and uninterrupted year of the Chicas al Agua program.
  2. 100% return from participants. The program has positively impacted more than 30 girls, their families and the community at large.
  3. Development of collaborative alliances with brands such as NRS, Global Green Fund, the local Municipality and the School Sports Club.
