protections altogether in 2020. Now, EPA is considering measures that would reinforce the agency’s ability to do their job protecting generations of

You might be wondering why it’s so crucial to limit our exposure to emissions from coal plants. It’s because:
- Coal plants are the leading source of mercury and 84 other hazardous pollutants.
- Mercury in these toxic emissions is converted to a dangerous neurotoxin that causes premature births, brain damage in babies, cardiovascular problems, and a host of other long-term issues.
- Coal plants also release lead, arsenic, chromium, and nickel into our skies — all of which are debilitating to our waterways and our bodies.
We cannot afford to allow this toxic chemical to flow unchecked into our ecosystem. It’s time to strengthen these safeguards today.
Since MATS was first implemented, mercury emissions from U.S. coal-fired power plants have declined by more than 80 percent. EPA’s own website says, “These new standards will avert up to 11,000 premature deaths, 4,700 heart attacks, and 130,000 asthma attacks every year.”
