Giving Stock
There are two key factors that many donors consider when making a gift of appreciated assets: impact on our mission and potential tax benefits. Many of our most committed donors find they’re able to give more generously when they donate appreciated assets than if they’d simply given cash. That generosity means we’re able to protect more waterways.
If you are itemizing deductions on your tax return, you may be eligible for a charitable deduction of the full value of your gift. Whether or not you are itemizing deductions, though, donating an appreciated asset can help you avoid paying tax on capital gains.
Always discuss donations with a tax consultant to maximize your benefits.
We have an intuitive, easy-to-use tool that will guide you through the process in less than 10 minutes! Get started with your gift of stock here.
Qualified Charitable Distributions
Donors 70.5 or older with a traditional IRA are eligible to make a tax-free donation to the Waterkeeper Alliance directly from their IRA. These gifts, called Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCDs) are always tax-free, regardless of whether or not you itemize deductions on your tax return. Use our online tool to:
- Create your QCD to support the Waterkeeper Alliance
- Request a tax acknowledgment letter for a QCD you’ve already made
- Download the forms you need if you’d prefer to finalize your QCD offline
- Learn more about QCDs and giving from your IRA to see if it’s right for you!

Legacy Giving
Many Waterkeeper Alliance supporters choose to leave a donation in their wills and trusts as an important way to have long-term impact, without any upfront cost during their lifetimes.
Making a will is one of the most impactful ways to extend your love and generosity to the causes and people you care about most. Legacy giving isn’t only for the wealthy — gifts of any size are deeply appreciated and have come in sizes ranging from $100 to $1 million. Together, we can continue making an impact for years to come.
One option is to visit FreeWill to create your legal will online or document your wishes and find an attorney near you. You can specify within your will the amount or percentage of your estate you’d like to leave (if any) to Waterkeeper Alliance and other charity organizations.
If you’d prefer to go straight to an attorney to draft your will and you choose to leave a gift in your will, we suggest the following language to advise us of your intentions:
“I bequeath (amount OR percentage) to Waterkeeper Alliance, Inc., a nonprofit corporation organized and existing under the laws of New York, with the principal business address of 180 Maiden Lane Suite 603 New York, NY 10038 and federal tax identification number 13-4071318.”

Capital gifts allow Waterkeeper Alliance to sustain its long-term health and mission-driven vitality, improve legal capacity, provide for special projects, and increase our endowment.
Waterkeeper Alliance is currently embarking on a bold expansion of its successful model of local communities organizing to protect their watersheds. We’re calling it Project Osiris, based on the Egyptian god of resurrection and regeneration who periodically flooded the river to provide fertile cropland along the Nile Valley. From the first Waterkeeper in New York, Hudson Riverkeeper, we’ve developed organically to become the largest global nonprofit solely focused on clean water. Given the magnitude of the global water crisis, we need to scale our model more rapidly to tackle the most urgent water issues of our time. Learn more about Project Osiris here.
By using the proven Waterkeeper model of locally-based citizen action and advocacy, combined with a highly connected, well-trained, professional global network, we envision this project to be achievable. If interested in making a capital gift, please contact Mary Beth Postman at [email protected].
