By: Waterkeeper Alliance
Today, in a letter to President Obama, Waterkeeper Alliance called for the President, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, to order an immediate halt to work on the Dakota Access Pipeline until a full, and comprehensive, review of the entire 1,200 mile pipeline is conducted to analyze the impacts to the land, water, and cultural resources along the entire route of the proposed project. Waterkeeper Alliance echoes the calls by the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe for the Department of Justice to immediately intervene to end the violent suppression of peaceful protest in North Dakota, and honor the rights of the water protectors to engage in peaceful protest.
With this action, Waterkeeper Alliance follows up two months of action on the Dakota Access pipeline with the release of a video supporting the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe’s historic stand to protect water, treaty rights and sacred sites. In September, our National Director Pete Nichols, traveling with a delegation of Yakima Tribal members, hand delivered a letter of solidarity to the Tribal Council and distributed supplies, staying several days in North Dakota to support Standing Rock. Our Savannah Riverkeeper Tonya Bonitatibus and Hurricane Creekkeeper John Wathen followed Pete to North Dakota and participated in tribal led work to draw attention to the valiant work to stop Dakota Access Pipeline.
Take action today by calling the White House (1-888-369-5791) and asking President Obama to take action now to stop the Dakota Access Pipeline. You can also email the President at whitehouse.gov/contact.
