In honor of World Water Day, Blue & Yellow, a sustainable Northern California apparel brand, and Waterkeeper Alliance, a U.S.-based international nonprofit dedicated to preserving and protecting everyone’s right to clean water, will collaborate to create sustainable t-shirts, bearing the organization’s iconic sturgeon logo. They will be printed with locally sourced algae ink, making them among the most sustainable on the market.
Blue & Yellow and Waterkeeper Alliance hope to educate and raise awareness about the importance of water, the impact of our actions, and our shared responsibility to help protect and sustainably manage this essential resource. From every t-shirt sold, Blue & Yellow will donate 15 USD to support and advance the work of Waterkeeper Alliance and the nearly 350 Waterkeepers who patrol and protect rivers, lakes, and coastal waterways in more than 45 countries on six continents. The two organizations are partners for One Percent For The Planet, an international non-profit, whose members donate at least one percent of their annual sales to environmental causes.
“At a young age, I was made aware of how important clean water is and how we take it for granted. Since I started in the apparel industry over three decades ago, I had never really thought about how water consumption affected everything else. I was shocked to discover that fashion wastes so much water, it’s the second most water-intensive industry in the world, producing nearly 20 percent of global wastewater. That was one of the reasons I left the industry,” says Chris Silverman, Founder of Blue & Yellow. “Our partnership with Waterkeeper Alliance will help us get the message out there and educate more people about this issue, globally. Droughts are real. Our goal is to bring people from all different sectors together to discuss water usage and how everything we do affects the planet, from the cars we drive, the food we eat, the bedding we use and yes the t-shirts we buy and wear.”
“Water quality and quantity challenges are present in every part of the world, but disproportionately impact Indigenous, underserved, and climate-vulnerable communities,” said Marc Yaggi, CEO of Waterkeeper Alliance. “Our partnership will help us raise awareness about how our choices manifest downstream while showcasing Blue & Yellow as a model for adopting sustainable and eco-conscious apparel and manufacturing processes.”
“Ensuring everyone’s right to clean water requires determination and a concerted effort by all,” added Gloria Reuben, President of Waterkeeper Alliance. “Our partnership with Blue & Yellow represents a commitment to look beyond the borders of our professions, our communities, and our countries to bring about incremental change that can lead to long-term solutions.”
T-shirts will be available for purchase on both the Blue & Yellow and Waterkeeper Alliance websites for 50 USD.
