Tijuana Waterkeeper Margarita Diaz is working to protect the Tijuana River Watershed (TRW), which straddles the U.S./Mexico border and is home to more than 1.5 million people, as well as to many rare, protected and endangered plant and animal species. South of the border, as the city of Tijuana succumbs to accelerated urban growth, its rivers, wetlands, and beaches have become a marine treasure buried under concrete.
A life-long steward of the environment, Margarita Diaz refused to stand by idly, as growth threatened her local rivers, wetlands and beaches – all vital to the health of the community and the environment. After leaving a career in architecture and sustainable housing to become the Tijuana Waterkeeper, Diaz’s contagious passion continues to unite communities across borders to take a collective stand, demanding strong environmental laws, enforcement, and transparency.
