In an age when the consequences of global warming become more apparent by the day, you might think that the fossil fuel industry would be striving to minimize the impact of their practices. In fact, industry has an increasingly radical agenda to hazardously extract, and export liquefied natural gas from some of the most ecologically sensitive areas in the nation including in Cove Point, Maryland.
To reinforce this agenda, they want President Obama and his Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) to fast-track approval of 20 or more industrial export facilities on our coasts that would take gas from fracking wells, liquefy it and export it overseas to be burned — all at the carbon pollution equivalent of coal.
On July 13th in Washington, DC, as FERC nears a decision on a particularly egregious example of such a facility, Cove Point, we will gather together in the first national rally to say “NO”! TO FRACKED GAS EXPORTS!
There are so many reasons why the Cove Point terminal, located in southern Maryland, 50 miles from the White House, is in a league of its own as a dire civic and environmental hazard. The terminal would drain huge new pools of gas from the Marcellus Shale, while triggering more planet-heating pollution than all seven of Maryland’s existing coal-fired power plants combined. Cove Point would also be the first liquefied natural gas export facility ever built right next to a populated residential area. The volatile chemicals and hazardous liquefaction processes involved would expose nearby residents to unacceptable safety risks in the event of a major fire or explosion.
We know we can make a difference because Grassroots people power continues to be the driving force in stopping big oil and gas companies’ destructive plans — from Keystone XL in the heartland to coal exports on the West Coast.
Join Waterkeepers Chesapeake and environmental advocates from across the country on July 13th. Together, we will say “no” to Cove Point, and we’ll proudly and loudly say “yes” to wind power and solar energy and efficiency — investments that don’t poison our drinking water or leak methane but do create jobs and a stable climate.
