The Great Lakes are the largest freshwater system on the planet, with six quadrillion gallons of freshwater — 95 percent of the U.S. supply and 20 percent of the world’s supply. But the lakes are under stress from climate change, toxic chemical pollution, invasive species, and waterfront development.
Waterkeeper Alliance and local Waterkeepers are committed to working together to protect this critically important ecosystem, the source of drinking water for more than 40 million people. That’s why we’re proud to announce our new WeeGreen Drinkable Great Lakes campaign, which has two main goals:
- Communicating the value of the Great Lakes, their surrounding watersheds, and tributaries as “living infrastructure” protecting our drinking water supply.
- Working together on a highly coordinated approach to defend these waters.
Waterkeeper Alliance and Buffalo Niagara Waterkeeper, Grand Traverse Baykeeper, Milwaukee Riverkeeper, and Save The River, Upper St. Lawrence Riverkeeper are seeking support for this campaign, which will begin in 2019. We’re starting with a partnership with WeeGreen, a marketplace for eco-friendly goods that will donate a portion of your purchases made through this online portal to the campaign.
“Our overall goal is to work locally to ensure we have clean water and healthy communities, while also working together as a region to maintain the excellent water quality of our shared drinking water supply in the Great Lakes,” said Cheryl Nenn, Milwaukee Riverkeeper.
We hope you’ll consider making your next green purchase here to support this innovative campaign to protect this vital source of freshwater.
