Community Organizer – Coosa Riverkeeper

ORGANIZATION DESCRIPTION:
Coosa Riverkeeper is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization located in the Coosa River watershed with an office in Mt Laurel, Ala. We work to protect, restore, and promote the Coosa River and its tributaries in Alabama. Working in over 5,000 square miles of Alabama with 220 miles of the Coosa River, our three programs work to improve water quality and protect public health. We do this by patrolling the waters, educating the public, and advocating for the river and its users.

QUALIFICATIONS: This position is designed as an opportunity for someone with limited professional advocacy and organizing experience. Applicants should be excited about collaborating with the general public and advocates of all ages and backgrounds, including anglers, boaters, and conservation-minded people. They should have a passion for environmental/health issues and have interest in voter education and building relationships with communities. This position will report to the Director of Community Engagement and be a part of the Community Engagement Team. Ideal candidates will have:
● A good understanding of Alabama and the communities around the Coosa River
● Experience with volunteering, education, and advocacy, ideally on environmental or health issues
● Experience with voter education and voter mobilization
● Strong communication, networking, and public speaking skills
● An ability and passion for working with a diverse cross-section of people in Alabama
● Comfort with technology and database management
● Comfort working non-traditional hours, including occasional weekends and evenings

RESPONSIBILITIES
● Mobilizing conservation minded voters to support legislation the protects water quality and public health
● Working with our Community Engagement Team to engage our activists on key issues that impact the Coosa River and the families who rely on it.
● Recruiting new activists who will join our text/email lists through petitioning, presentations, phone calls, and events
● Helping to work with and support our town hall meetings in communities throughout the Coosa River watershed
● Working to connect Coosa Riverkeeper with key stakeholders across Alabama and within the Coosa River watershed through attendance of community meetings and networking

COMPENSATION: This is a one year grant funded position. Salary range is $30,000-$40,000 dependent on experience. This position will be paid bimonthly on the 1st and 15th of each month.
