A CAFO, or concentrated animal feeding operation, is a large-scale facility that confines and feeds massive numbers of animals. Some CAFOs actually hold millions in their confinement barns at any one time. There are around 20,000 Large CAFOs and hundreds of thousands of Medium CAFOs across our country, and they produce colossal amounts of concentrated waste — feces, urine, blood, antibiotics, and other fluids.
Liquid waste from CAFOs is often stored in unimaginably foul, open-air pits the size of football fields. But these fill up quickly. To make room for more and more excrement, managers empty the pits . . . by spraying the filth onto adjacent fields — where it can easily contaminate groundwater and waterways, often sickening local human and wildlife populations.
For years, Waterkeeper Alliance warned about this growing environmental time bomb. When hurricanes Matthew and Florence struck North Carolina in recent years, 91 swine CAFOs and 36 poultry CAFOs were located in areas that flooded after both storms. That released millions of gallons of raw waste into nearby waterways, threatening the health of untold numbers of humans, marine species, and other wildlife.
Of course, residents of the “Tar Heel State” are hardly the only victims of this practice. CAFOs defile countless lakes, rivers, streams, and groundwater across the U.S.
Your help is urgently needed to fight this crisis. Please provide a generous gift to our Pure Farms, Pure Waters campaign today so we can hold corporate meat producers accountable for their poor waste management practices.
Your renewed support of the Pure Farms, Pure Waters campaign is critically needed today. Your generosity allows Waterkeeper Alliance to:
- Expose the destructive nature of CAFOs to the public and policy decision-makers.
- Promote sustainable food systems and independent farmers.
- Force state and federal authorities to strengthen and enforce rules against the discharge of animal waste into our waterways, and take legal action against corporate rulebreakers.
- Fight to keep our waterways drinkable, fishable, swimmable.
Only by standing together can we prevent fields of filth from destroying our waterways and communities.
