The Gan River is the longest river in Jiangxi Province and the second longest branch of the Yangtze River. The Gan River watershed covers an area of 31,254.19 square miles and accounts for 50% of Province’s landmass. It is the source of drinking water for the people of Nanchang City. Currently, the river is threatened by industrial and nonpoint source pollution.
Dan Liu, the Gan River Waterkeeper, is the director and founder of Qing Gan Ecology Education Center (QGEEC), the sponsoring organization. Mr. Liu was named the "Jiangxi Province Mother River Protector" in 2014, became a member of Nanchang Youth Federation in 2015, and was recognized as one of the G20 China Environmental Leaders in 2016. Mr. Liu has a Bachelor and Master degree in Land Resource Management. He is also an avid bird watcher.
