The Huai River originates from the Tongbai Mountains in the western part of Henan Province, flowing through 181 cities in 5 provinces including Henan, Hubei, Anhui, Shandong and Jiangsu. The Huai watershed is home to a number of outstanding historical figures, including scholars like Confucius, Mencius, and Laozi, and other historical figures such as Liu Bang, Xiang Yu, and Cao Cao. The Huai River is one of the most polluted watersheds in China due to industrial pollution, agricultural pollution and household wastes.
Under the guidance of former Upper Huai River Waterkeeper, Minjie Huo will continue the work of protecting the Huai River. Mr. Huo has been protecting the Huai River basin since 2001. Through his work on water pollution investigation, policy advocacy, and water purification, he has gained many experiences and supporters in the basin area. In particular, he developed a water purification system that has been installed in 50 high pollution areas of the Huai River. These 50 systems have resolved drinking water problems for more than 80,000 villagers.
