The Emerald Coast is an unofficial name for the coastal area in the US state of Florida on the Gulf of Mexico that stretches about 100 miles (160 km) through five counties, Escambia, Santa Rosa, Okaloosa, Walton, and Bay, from Pensacola to Panama City. Some South Alabama communities on the coast of Baldwin County, such as Gulf Shores, Orange Beach and Fort Morgan, embrace the term as well. Bodies of wate rinclude Peridod Bay, Escambia Bay, Pnesacola Bay, East Bay, Blackwater River, Santa Rosa Sound, Bayou Grande, Bayou Chico, and Weekley Bayou.
Laurie Murphy is the Executive Director and “Coastkeeper” for Emerald Coastkeeper, Inc. in Pensacola, Florida. She received her B.S. in Oceanography and Master’s Certification in Geographical Information Science from the University of West Florida. Some of Laurie’s research has included the impacts of climate change in Senegal, Africa, the design of both FEMA disaster declaration charts from Hurricane Sandy and emergency hurricane evacuation route maps for Tampa, Florida. Laurie currently resides in Pensacola, Florida with her husband Pat.
