The five coastal bays and their tributaries on Maryland's Eastern Shore ecnompass 237 square miles. This coastal plain is home to many rare and endangered plants and animals, forests and wetlands vital to migrating songbirds and waterfowl, and numberous shellfish and finfish which are important to both recreational and commercial fisheries. The bays are uniformaly shallow, scarecly more than 6 feet deep at their deepest points, with some tributaties that narrow to gullies at low tide.
Kathy Phillips is Assateague Coastal Trust's Executive Director and the Assateague COASTKEEPER. A Worcester County resident since 1971, Kathy has served as chair of the Democratic Central Committee of Worcester County as well as board member of the Eastern Surfing Association, the United States Surfing Federation, and Surfing America. She is also a 2003 inductee to the East Coast Surfing Hall of Fame.
