Rafaela Iturralde Mantilla

Organizer, Latin America

Since 10/1/19

Rafa is an Ecuadorian advocate of the Rights of Nature in the Latin American region and around the world. She has previously worked with sustainable farming in the Galapagos Islands, created a Climate Justice platform for small environmental organizations in Ecuador, and has done research on invasive species in two rivers in upstate New York. Rafa has been involved in the Rights of Nature movement for about 4 years, mostly volunteering for the Global Alliance for the Rights of Nature (GARN) in Ecuador, France, and Germany. In 2017, she studied abroad in New Zealand where she learned and researched more about the Voice of Nature and the rights of the Whanganui River. After graduating from Skidmore College with a double major in Environmental Studies and International Affairs, she interned for GARN in Quito, leading up to the International Rights of Nature Symposium to commemorate the 10th Anniversary of the Rights of Nature in Ecuador. Today, she lives in New York City where she founded the Youth Circle for the Rights of Nature with three other youth from the USA, Belgium, and Sweden.
