We carried out five beach cleanups from October 2021 to March 2022, after a good, long time of being in pause for the pandemic. On our first day back, we carried out a cleanup in the “La Boca” stream, in the community of La Ribera, ultimately cleaning 1.3 km of area. Héctor Castro, coordinator of the Federal Maritime Terrestrial Zone (ZOFEMAT) La Ribera and four members of his work team supported us during this activity. We were also joined by two students from La Ribera high school.
The last beach cleanup of 2021 was carried out in the community of Cabo Pulmo on November 30. We traveled almost 4 km along a stream that channels to the main beach. During this cleanup, we recovered 187 pieces of garbage, most of which were plastic products such as: beverage bottles, food wrappers, as well as small pieces of said material.
So far in 2022, we have organized two cleanups, and participated in another led by the delegation from La Ribera on January 28. On March 19 and 26, we traveled almost 3 km, from the main beach and the Cabo Pulmo stream. We were accompanied by 18 people, members of the Cabo Pulmo community (national and foreign), children of the “Environmental Nursery of Cabo Pulmo” ACCP members, and even tourists visiting the community, as well as a team of work Esteban Montaño (coordinator of public services), his team of work and ZOFEMAT La Ribera.
Unfortunately the places visited were not free of waste. We found a lot of plastic waste, most of it recyclable. There was also toilet paper, burned waste, and beverage cans, among others. I registered a total of 663 pieces. In the first cleaning alone, we filled an entire truck.
We hope that one day this type of activity will no longer be necessary in the future, that our work and recreational use sites will be clean for all. We thank the people from different areas who supported us during the cleanings!
