Friends for the Conservation of Cabo Pulmo (Amigos para la Conservación de Cabo Pulmo or ACCP, home to Cabo Pulmo Coast Waterkeeper) is a local community group founded in 2003 with the mission of preserving Cabo Pulmo National Park and the well-being of communities in the East Cape Region. In its beginnings, ACCP worked on the conservation of sea turtles. We have since expanded to focus on five strategic lines: institutional development, conservation, community, regional bonding, and communication.
Cabo Pulmo Coast Waterkeeper has found success thanks to the commitment of our community to enforce and protect the park. They are now being rewarded with the fruits of their labor. Fishing just outside the park is better than before and the tourism industry has taken off. In return, residents continue to enforce park regulations, clean the beaches, and protect important species like nesting sea turtles.
However our challenge is ongoing, as tourism in the region grows and puts new pressures on the reefs and fish populations. Plans have been in the works (and eventually shelved) for various resorts only miles from the park and its reef that, if improperly managed, could seriously impact the progress made.
