AmeriCorps Member – Youghiogheny Riverkeeper

The Youghiogheny Riverkeeper is a program of the Mountain Watershed Association and has expanded MWA’s vision into the larger Youghiogheny River basin. The Yough Riverkeeper is the public advocate for the Youghiogheny River watershed.  We use grassroots efforts to defend against further pollution, to improve water quality and to conserve the natural ecology and character of the region.

This position is offered through the Pennsylvania Mountain Service Corps and is a full-time temporary position (1,700 hours) from August 20, 2019 – August 7, 2020. 

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct biological and chemical water quality monitoring
  • Conduct routine maintenance activities at abandoned mine drainage treatment systems
  • Conduct bacteria sampling on a weekly basis from May to September throughout the Youghiogheny River watershed and report collected data to the theswimguide.org
  • Assist in the planning aspects and attend the annual Indian Creek Watershed Festival
  • Assist in environmental education programs as needed
  • Assist in the development of the Indian Creek and Upper Youghiogheny River Conservation Plans
  • Engagement of members through volunteer opportunities
  • Coordinate activities and meetings for the Indian Creek Valley Trail
  • Assist with the coordination of MWA’s Annual Clean Water Banquet
