The Han River (Hanjiang) is the largest tributary of the Yangtze River. It rises from its source in Shaanxi Province, and pours into the Yangtze River in Hubei Province. The section that flows within Xiangfan's boundary is also known as the "golden waterway." Its beauty has been compared to the Rhine River in Germany. However, it is threaten by the South-North Water Transfer Project, which is diminishing the water quality from drinkable to non-drinkable.

Jianli Yun is a pioneer of grassroots advocacy in China. She had led over 700 in-depth surveys on pollution sources along the Han River, hosted over 800 educational events, and outreached to more than 44 million people. She established the first environmental group in Hubei, Green Han River, in 2002, and joined Waterkeeper Alliance in 2007 as the Middle Han River Waterkeeper. Prior to Green Han River, Ms. Yun served as member of both the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) of Hubei Province, and Xiangyang City for many years.
