The Xiang River is the largest river in Hunan Province and one of the largest tributaries of the Yangtze River. 72.4% of the province’s gross domestic product is generated mainly from industrial factories within the river basin. Thus earning the title “home of nonferrous metals.” The Xiang River has become one of the most polluted rivers in the country.
He Tang is a native of Hunan Ningxiang County. She graduated from Wuhan’s Huazhong Agricultural University with a major in Sociology. In 2012, Circle of Blue (an international environmental organization) recognized her as the “Advocate”.
