Thim Chu (‘chu’ meaning ‘river’ in the local language) runs through Thimphu, Bhutan’s capital city. It provides water to more than 100,000 people. The Thim Chu once provided drinking water to local residents can only be used for irrigation now. It is threatened by municipal and industrial waste.

Nedup Tshering is the Thim Chu Waterkeeper and Executive Director of Clean Bhutan, the sponsoring NGO whose mission is to achieve Zero Waste Bhutan by 2030). Nedup holds an MSc in Environmental Management and Development from the Australian National University and served for nearly 10 years with the National Environment Commission of Bhutan.
