The Watauga River Basin originates in the Blue Ridge Province of the Southern Appalachian Mountains in northwestern North Carolina. This watershed drains north to northwest from North Carolina to northeast Tennessee where the Watauga River joins the South Fork of the Holston River at Boone Lake. The Watauga River Basin is nestled between the French Broad River Basin to the south, the Catawba River Basin to the southeast, the Yadkin-Peedee River Basin to the east and the New River Basin to the north. The French Broad, New, and Watauga River Basins flow west into the Mississippi drainage and the Gulf of Mexico, while the Catawba and Yadkin-Peedee River Basins run east to the Atlantic Ocean.
Andy is MountainTrue’s Watauga Riverkeeper, protecting and advocating for the Watauga River Basin. Andy has a passion for clean, cold, fishable, drinkable, swimmable water. As a long time fly fisherman, educator and guide, Andy is intimately familiar with the watershed from headwaters to the tailwater and is passionate about protecting the places we love.
