As the Director of Communications & Marketing at Waterkeeper Alliance, Maia strengthens and amplifies the voice of our international Waterkeepers through capacity building, advocacy, communications, and fundraising. By identifying emerging technologies and trends, she ensures that Waterkeeper Alliance is utilizing the best tools to further its mission by leading and building our presence in traditional and digital media.
Maia grew up on Connecticut’s Branford River, volunteering with local environmental groups whose work focused on the estuary and surrounding wetlands. She received her BA from The New School with a concentration in Urban Environmental Policy & Sustainability, focusing her study on environmental health, justice and anthropology. After graduation, she spent a year in AmeriCorps working as a CSA organizer in Crown Heights for Hunger Free America. Before joining Waterkeeper Alliance, she was the Marketing Manager of the Brooklyn Brewery, where she oversaw social media, press relations, marketing initiatives & community partnerships. She has been active in the Brooklyn art & nonprofit worlds since 2004, and has an unhealthy obsession with cats, hedgehogs, alpacas & pygmy goats.
