Europe

Currently, there are Waterkeeper organizations in the Czech Republic, England, and Russia.  The seven Russian Waterkeeper organizations are in the early stages of development.  European Waterkeepers all are working to develop their organizations to be a sustainable force for clean water and strong communities in their countries.  Waterkeeper Alliance also has been fielding inquiries for new Waterkeeper organizations in Spain, Portugal, Italy and Germany

Main Threats

Europe’s Waterkeeper organizations face threats to their waterways that are as unique as each European country. These issues range from the massive industrial contamination in Russia, a legacy of the rapid pace of the Soviet Union’s industrialization, to privatization of water resources, to restoring and monitoring important tributaries outside of Prague and elsewhere.

Waterkeepers Russia

Currently, there are seven Waterkeeper organizations in the early stages of development in Russia, with Vyatka Riverkeeper as the first Waterkeeper in Russia.
